This is a brilliant idea because I made my friend feel safe even though I wasn't there in person. I can see how this could be comforting, but it's actually making you more vulnerable and more likely to be targeted by a predator. Situational awareness is critical to self defense. Being on the phone not only reduces your ability to stay aware, but increases the perceived reward that a potential attacker stands to gain by confronting you. The best action is to walk confidently with your head up, scanning your surroundings with ALL of your senses, while not displaying anything valuable. Just by being alert and confident, you increase the perceived risk of attacking you, therefore decreasing the chance that someone will think you're worth it.
